Analysis of the Factors of Impact of Economic Sanctions on Iran and Solutions to Cope with It

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the effect of economic sanctions on Iran, using worldwide experiments, also it provides scientific and practical strategies to cope with economic sanctions and prioritize these strategies. To this end, the authors use the theoretical foundations of economic sanctions and introduce 6 factors, as reductive factors of the effect of economic sanctions (namely; being gradual and permanent, oil revenue, using import substitution strategy for development, worldwide competition, lack of perfect accompaniment of emerging economies that are independent from sanctions, using exterritorial banking), and also introduce 8 factors, as enhancing factors of the effect of economic sanctions (namely; multilateral sanctions, closure of many routes to bypass sanctions, limited access to the international financial system, targeting oil revenue, synchronization of economic sanctions through the impact of economic transformation project, heavy reliance of domestic production on foreign technology, raw materials and intermediates, dependence of Iran′s currency system on the dollar and euro, lack of public opinion management). Finally, this study suggests 8 tangible strategies to cope with economic sanctions by taking into account the Islamic – Iranian ideals and mentioned factors. These strategies are based on reducing benefits and increasing costs of sanctioning parties and increasing the benefits and reducing the costs of target countries. At the end, it ranks and prioritizes suggested strategies using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).
